The UAL Art Collection

Following the Summer Exhibition, I recieved an email from Lucy Pardue, the curator of the UAL Art Collection, which is based at LCC. It said that 'Each year we receive recommendations for stand-out graduates’ work from across the UAL colleges and after reviewing each on a case-by-case basis, purchase a small selection of those'. The email invited me to submit images, information and prices for my graduate show work and it would be considered for purchase for the Collection.

I wasn't sure if the email referred to all of the pieces in my show, so I presented all of them in a document and sent it off with prices.

I recieved a reply to say that the UAL Collection would like to purchase my woodcut print and the film. I was so pleased! It was also really nice to get feedback. Lucie wrote in the email that 'We were all really impressed with your work: we thought your suggestions of touch, the body’s interaction with the world and haptic responses really came through successfully in your works. We loved the whole installation however I’m afraid with our budget constraints we are limited to what we can afford, and therefore we would be very happy to purchase Tentative (film and cast fingertips) and Inflect, for a total price of £550.'

After sending off an invoice and filling out a 'UAL Art Collection Acquisition form' with details about myself, the work, and how I wanted the work to be stored/presented, I arranged a date to take the work to LCC and meet Lucie the curator.

Lucie told me that I was one of thirteen other graduate whose work had been selected for the collection. She also told me that I would be invited to be one of the selectors next year, to visit a UAL show and help to choose other works for the collection. I was also told that I could still exhibit the artworks if I wanted; UAL would own the works but I could loan them back if I wanted.
